I rarely blog. I take photos, I make things, I play music, and I write poems that sometimes turn into lyrics. I tend to think visually and then connect those thoughts with poetry. There’s a lot of mythology, transmutation, and pattern recognition, real or imaginary, going on in my head. I talk to myself in allegory, anecdote, alliteration and celebrity voices.
This looks like that and it sounds like this and smells like that but reminds me of this. It’s anecdotal but scholars say this.
My art is reactionary. As in, it’s usually created as a reaction to something happening in the news and then it sits and ferments and circles inside my skull until it vomits itself onto a page. It rarely comes from the aether anymore. I’m an ‘art imitates life’ kind of creator.
I’ve been digging through my boxes and totes of finished pieces for the last few weeks and prepping them to photograph for my website. I have hundreds of pieces to catalog. It’s enough to keep me busy for awhile.
And, of course, in pure artist fashion, I managed to get sidetracked when my artwork outgrew the solid white melamine backdrop and I had to rearrange the artwork storage in the loft to prep a piece of leftover drywall for a bigger backdrop.
I figured as long as there’s a space in the loft now I should put together those small Art Crawl display tables and prep those canvases I picked up from Marketplace last year… You know, since the rollers and 3 inch brushes were out.
As I uploaded the first batch of pics to the site to test its functionality I realized my Primary Image List needed tweaking to save time with copying and pasting. It has been a decade since I last created conditional formulas in Excel and I now use LibreOffice Calc so I thought, “this is the perfect time to figure out if Calc uses the same functions as Excel, let’s take the emotion out of pricing, but I absolutely need to know materials cost, margins, shipping, etc.” I’ve been meaning to do this for awhile.

And it turns out if you give an artist a bunch of admin work, he’s going to want to steal candy out of his kids’ Halloween buckets to go with it.
